Can I declare previously undeclared income or assets in Switzerland?

Yes, in many cases. Switzerland allows a one-time penalty-free voluntary disclosure (straflose Selbstanzeige) for previously undeclared income or assets, provided certain conditions are met. The disclosure must be complete, the tax authorities must not already be aware of the omission, and it can generally only be used once. While back taxes and interest remain payable, this process can help taxpayers regularise their tax affairs without fines.

Income Tax & Tax Returns

Dear taxum, I think I may have forgotten to declare something over the years. Is it too late to fix it?

Not necessarily. But the window to act is narrower than most people realise.

Most cantons offer a one-time penalty-free voluntary disclosure - the “straflose Selbstanzeige”. It allows you to come forward with previously undeclared income or assets and avoid any fines.

The conditions are strict. The disclosure must be complete - not selective. The tax authorities must not already be aware of the omission. And it can only be used once in a lifetime.

I have sat with clients who waited too long, assuming the issue was too small to matter or too old to surface. Neither is usually true.

If something has been sitting undeclared, the time to address it is before someone else finds it first.
