What do I need to do before leaving Switzerland for tax purposes?

Before leaving Switzerland, you must complete your Swiss tax obligations. When you deregister, your Swiss tax year usually ends on your departure date. You must declare all income and worldwide assets up to that date. It's also important to ensure you can receive correspondence from the Swiss tax authorities after you leave, as tax assessments and requests for information may still be issued. Appointing a Swiss tax representative can help you manage any outstanding matters after your departure.

Moving to & from Switzerland

Dear taxum, I'm moving back home next month. Do I just deregister and I'm done?
I wish it were that simple.

When you deregister, your Swiss tax year closes on that date. Everything up to that moment still needs to be declared - your income, your worldwide assets, the full picture. The file does not close just because you have started packing.

What I always tell clients: contact us before you leave, not the tax authorities. Swiss tax authorities do not send correspondence abroad - not assessments, not queries, not requests for documents.
We can appoint a tax representative in Switzerland on your behalf, so nothing gets missed after your departure. The clients who sort this before they leave do so cleanly. The ones who don't sometimes find out months later that something was missed.

Switzerland is generous with its goodbyes. It just likes to finish the paperwork first.
